Lukewarm Early Reviews May Bog Down WinPho 7

The first reviews of Windows Phone 7 smartphones -- the Samsung Focus and the HTC HD7 -- are in, and they range from lukewarm at the low end to acceptable. Will smartphone buyers be influenced by the reviews? Or do they generally decide what they want first, then go get it? Will the reception for WinPho 7 and smartphones running the operating system make Microsoft's future or break it?

Google revises internal privacy practices, appoints director of privacy

Google's run into quite a number of privacy concerns in the past, and things hit something of a tipping point earlier this year when it was revealed that the company was snooping on WiFi data while it was collecting Street View images. Now Google has finally come back with some answers to some privacy questions it says it's been studying for the past several months. First and foremost is the appointment of Alma Whitten as the company's new directory of privacy, who will manage Google's privacy efforts across both engineering and product management, and ensure that the company builds "effective privacy controls" into its products and internal practices. Backing that up is some expanded privacy training, including a new program that all employees will be required to take beginning in December, and some new internal compliance procedures, which includes a requirement that every engineering project leader maintain a privacy design document for each project they're working on. Hit up the source link below for the company's complete statement on the matter.

Watch This Unraveled Cassette Tape Become a Boom Box [Video]

BrussPup, we well know, is a master of illusions. For his next trick, watch him render an impressively detailed boombox using only unraveled cassette tape. Don't worry, you'll remember what both of those things are once you see them. [YouTube] More »

SuperOneClick is an easy way to root almost any Android phone

There's a new one-click wonder in town: SuperOneClick. It's free, full-featured, and roots almost every phone. Get it while it's hot, Android users!

SuperOneClick is a standard rooting kit, but with a simple GUI to mask all complexity from the end-user. Instead of running the risk of bricking your phone with fiddly command-line tools, this app just requires a single click of the button. You can also unroot the phone and enable Non-Market Apps -- again, with one click. If that wasn't enough, there's even a video showing you how to do it after the break!

There are a few phones that are incompatible with SuperOneclick (all of them HTC), but even then, it's just a matter of visiting Unrevoked and following some (fairly) simple guides. There's also one other problem: it's Windows-only, but it looks like the next major version will support Linux. Mac will have to wait a little longer -- but do Mac users actually own Android phones...?
